September: Clicking Restart

Do you know what I love about video games? You can restart the game if you don’t like the route you took. Take Sims, for example; if you don’t like the career you chose, the house you built, or the people you met, you can just start the game again. I sometimes wish life was like that, where you could see what another path would have been like if you made one slight difference.

Introduction

Last month, I started to question my life choices. I started seeing friends again, and I listened to what they’ve achieved in the past year. Yes, I am proud of them, but a part of me wondered, would I be where they are if I chose differently?

It is hard to know if the path you took is the right one if you cannot compare the two.

Stopping

This mindset caused me just to stop. I felt like I couldn’t possibly move forward without having an action plan in place. Take blogging, for example; I kept telling myself, I’ll sit down tomorrow and focus on it all. I’ll do it ALL. Schedule Tweets, write blog posts, create Pinterest Pins, schedule Instagram posts, but of course, tomorrow came, time ran out, and I told myself I would do it tomorrow.

It became this big chore rather than something I enjoyed doing. I didn’t want it to be, but that is what it became.

I fixated on what would happen next, what the next step was, rather than focusing on now. I wanted the full plan rather than appreciating the moment and writing because I loved it.

Sometimes you just don’t know

The truth is, sometimes you just don’t know what tomorrow will bring. You know in school, when you are asked, what do you want to be when you are older? We are told we have to pick a profession now. Sometimes you just don’t know, and why is that not okay?

Sometimes it takes longer for some to know what they want to do in life, and that’s okay. It shouldn’t be rushed, and you should savour the journey as you go. Everyone has a different story of how they ended up in their dream job or ideal life.

So, when asked the question, what do you want to be when you are older? I’d rather answer with one word – happy.

Clicking restart

I don’t have to respawn at 18 to go down a different path in my life. I can make the changes today that will affect my future, as it is never too late to restart.

That’s why I am clicking restart for September.

For my blog, that means I am focusing on writing what I want, and my adventures, the struggles and the experiences I have as a twenty-something-year-old.

I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but right now, I am happy creating content I enjoy and trying new ways to create content on different platforms. Sure, I will make mistakes, and it might not work, but I’ll keep trying and at each stage, I will remember that everyone starts somewhere, everyone struggles at some point, and no one really knows what they are doing.

September 2021

With me clicking restart, this means one thing – more content coming your way! After writing this post, I felt inspired to write, and it felt like I never wanted to stop. I have scheduled four posts, for September, at the time of writing this, and I can’t wait to share each one with you.

Summary

Reading this back, it does seem like quite a ramble, and a large percentage of my being wants to go back and change it, but I won’t. Writing everything felt like a deep sign after a tiring day. It felt like that first stretch in the morning when you wake up or lying under a warm blanket after being outside in the rain.

It might be a bit chaotic, but so is life, let’s be honest. If the past year has shown us anything, it’s that we never know what will happen next.

I always finish my post with a question, but I’m not sure what question to ask this time around. Let’s go with, what one change have you made this year that you love?

Maybe you’ve started running, drinking coffee or dyed your hair, anything? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Some of the best focus comes from chaos as you finally understand what you no longer want — giving you a path to begin on again. I think figuring out what direction you want in life is something that comes along a number of times as we experience different things — it can be a scary/exciting time so I am here cheering you on! I look forward to reading your future posts on here.

  2. You write very well, it’s easy to follow, I’m a rambler myself, so you’re in good company! A lot of people wait till it’s New Year or a Monday but you can restart anytime you want! By the sounds of it September was the right time for you (I’m a fate/destiny person) in answer to your question (that I’ll have to remind myself because I’m rambling) ahh…I haven’t started anything new, I’ve just had more time to do it while working from home, so I’ve got further than I have before! Oh! Weekly FaceTime quizzes were a thing for a while until my grandad and I faced a power struggle 😂 x

    1. Thank you so much! I still have the habit of saying to myself, ‘I’ll start on Monday’, but I try to correct myself and say ‘why can’t you do it now’.

September has been so much better, and it’s only the 7th, so I hope it continues.

I loved the stage of FaceTime quizzes, but my family and friends got way too competitive as well. 😂 Thank you for your comment!

    1. The ‘what if’s’ constantly keep me awake, but I am actively trying to stop those thoughts. I am glad you can relate.

You are right; I should focus on what I have done rather than what I haven’t. Thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate it! 💜

  3. What a beautiful and touching post. We were all asked at a young age what we wanted to be when we’re older, and there’s so much pressure in that. People who chose a career path in their teens and are now unhappy with where they are as adults. I wish more people would encourage others to take their time to discover their passions, and that it’s ok to reset. We can’t predict what happens 10 minutes from now, how can we possibly predict our future. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know” and “I’m going to take my time.”

I also love your response to “What do you want to be when you are older?” Very powerful! I look forward to more posts from you! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you so much! There really is so much pressure, but sometimes, you don’t know, and you can feel very isolated as everyone else seems to have everything sorted.

You are right; we should encourage others to take their time. It is okay if you know the career you want from a young age or if you decide to change your career path, or even if you can’t decide, it’s all okay, but we are all different.

I like what you said about not knowing what happens in 10 minutes; you are right!

I am glad you enjoyed this post; thank you so much for your insightful comment; it was lovely to read. 😊

  4. Such a good post. I’m 33 and only now I know what I want to be when I grow up! The best change I have made this year is starting my blog and YouTube channel. They are things I’ve wanted to do for years and now I wish I’d started sooner.

    1. I love how blogging has made me realise that you can discover what you want to do at any age!

Thank you for your comment! I am happy you have discovered what you want to be when you grow up.

I wish I had started sooner as well. 😊
